Quick Hits: Neil Young, Grammys, Beatles, Bon Jovi, Rihanna, Flobots
November 11, 2009

Neil Young
Neil Young will be honored as the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year on January 29 in Los Angeles. An all-star lineup of acts, including Dave Matthews Band, Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mellencamp and Crosby, Stills & Nash, will pay tribute to Young for his music and his extensive charitable works. Rolling Stone reports that Jackson Browne, Norah Jones, James Taylor, Josh Groban, Ozomatli and many more are also on the bill for the event, which takes place two days before the Grammy Awards.

Speaking of the Grammys, the Grammy Nominations Concert special will air live on CBS on December 2. The official Grammys Twitter account has revealed that LL Cool J will host the show, with the Black Eyed Peas and Maxwell performing.

A new Beatles documentary, The Beatles On Record, will debut on the History Channel Wednesday, November 25 at 10 p.m. The special is narrated entirely by the Fab Four, as well as Sir George Martin, and follows the Beatles' entire career. It includes over 60 songs, rarely seen footage and images from The Beatles' archives along with never-before-heard outtakes of conversation from the original recording sessions.

Songwriter Samuel Bartley Steele is suing Bon Jovi, Time Warner and Major League Baseball for $400 billion, claiming the parties ripped off a song he wrote about the Boston Red Sox. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steele says his song, "(Man I Really) Love This Team" was given to Red Sox and MLB executives and players. In 2007, the Bon Jovi song "I Love This Town" was used by MLB for TBS' playoff coverage. Steele claims that the band ripped off his song and that Jon Bon Jovi heard his tune at some point. Then, Steele's own musicologist testified that the songs weren't very similar. A district judge ruled that no reasonable jury could conclude there was substantial similarity between the songs and dismissed the claim. However,
Steele is sticking to his guns and his outragous price tag, having appealed his $400 billion claim to an appeals court last Friday.

Rihanna will host Premiere Radio Networks' syndicated show, The iTunes Download with Alex Luke, this weekend. She will discuss her new album Rated R, her musical influences, and she'll play songs off her iPod.

Flobots are working on finishing off the follow-up to their breakthrough album, Fight With Tools. The album, tentatively titled Survival Story, is being produced by Beastie Boys cohort Mario Caldato Jr. and is slated for a 2010 release. The group kicks off a month of touring tomorrow (11/12) in Las Vegas, winding up with two nights at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO on December 17 and 18.
