Q3 Radio Revenue Roundup
November 13, 2009

Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) reports its Q3 '09 results, with consolidated net revenue down six percent to $38.6 million, from $41.3 million. SBS attributed much of the drop to a decline in radio net revenue of $1.9 million in the quarter. SBS saw a decline in radio revenue "caused mainly by the decline in economic conditions."

As previously reported, Beasley Broadcast Group reported third quarter revenue of $24.4 million, a 20.1 percent decline over the same quarter last year.

CBS Corp. has released its 2009 Q3 results, with the company's overall revenue down slightly from $3.38 billion to $3.35 billion. Looking specifically at CBS Radio, revenue was down 19 percent from a year ago, from $392.5 million to $318.9 million. The decline was attributed to "continued weakness in the radio advertising marketplace." Operating income was $51.1 million in Q3, including an impairment charge of $31.7 million from radio station divestitures.

Citadel Broadcasting has released its third quarter 2009 results, as well as potential plans to file for bankruptcy. In a filing with the SEC, Citadel revealed it "does not expect to meet its covenant requirements under the Senior Credit and Term Facility as of January 15, 2010." It added that "the company is currently in discussions with its lenders regarding this matter, including the possibility of seeking relief through a Chapter 11 filing." In Q3, Citadel's radio net revenue dropped 9.9 percent to $155.8 million. Net revenue for Citadel Media, its network radio business, took a major hit, dropping 31.5 percent to $29.4. The decline was attributed to the loss of the legendary Paul Harvey, who passed away this year, and Sean Hannity's defection from Citadel.

Clear Channel Media Holdings released its third quarter fiscal results for 2009. Overall revenue for the company dropped by 17 percent to $1.4 billion from $1.7 billion a year ago. Clear Channel Radio revenue was off by 17 percent from Q3 '08, down to $703.2 million from $843.94 million. CC operating expenses fell by 17 percent to $969.8 million in Q3. Clear Channel Outdoor revenue was down 19 percent for Q3, to $660.6 million.

Cumulus has released its 2009 third quarter fiscal results, with net revenue down from $80 million a year ago to $65.1 million, an 18.5 percent decline. The broadcaster attributed the drop to "the impact the current economic recession has had across our entire station platform and industry at large." Station operating expenses were down from $50.8 million to $40.2 million in Q3, while station operating income fell from $29.2 million to $25 million.

Entercom Communications has released its Q3 '09 financial report, with net revenue down 14 percent to $99.8 million, with station expenses declining eight percent to $65.6 million. Station operating income decreased 23 percent to $34.2 million. David J. Field, Entercom President/CEO, stated, "Entercom's third quarter results improved sequentially from the second quarter as business conditions stabilized and the company's cost cutting measures continued to drive expenses lower. We are increasingly optimistic about 2010 based upon a number of indications of improving demand for advertising in the year ahead, particularly in light of easy comparative results after two years of cyclical decline across virtually all ad sectors. Furthermore, we believe that radio’s strong audience listening trends and outstanding value proposition for advertisers position the industry to grow at the expense of certain competitive media experiencing significant audience erosion."

Entravision Communications saw its net revenue fall 17 percent in Q3 '09, from $61 million to $50.8 million. Operating expenses fell from $37 million to $30.6 million in Q3.

Fisher Communications has reported its third quarter revenue for 2009. Net revenue dropped 18 percent from a year ago, from $42.3 million to  $34.5 million, due to the loss of Seattle Mariners broadcasts from KOMO/Seattle. Radio revenue for Q3 was off by 21 percent to $6 million.

Radio One
previously reported its third quarter revenue results for 2009, with the company's net revenue down 12 percent to $75.5 million.

Regent Communications has released its Q3 revenue results, with net broadcast revenue down 13.9 percent from $25.3 million a year ago to $21.8 million. Regent saw a net loss in the quarter of $0.4 million, whereas a year ago it took a net loss of $46.3 million, due to a non-cash imparement charge.

Saga Communications has reported its Q3 '09 fiscal results, with net operating revenue off 13.7 percent to $31.3 million. Station operating expenses fell to $23.6 million from $26.6 million a year ago.

Salem Communications saw its total revenue in Q3 '09 decline from $54.4 million to $48.9 million, a 10 percent decline. Its broadcasting division saw net revenue fall 11.4 percent from $47.4 million to $42 million. Station operating income fell by 8.2 percent, from $16.4 million to $15.1 million.

Univision saw its overall company revenue grow by 1.4 percent to $526.8 million in Q3 '09, but its radio revenue fell from $107.7 million a year ago to $93.4 million.
