Janet Jackson | In her first televised interview since Michael Jackson died on June 25, Janet Jackson told ABC's In the Spotlight that she blames Dr. Conrad Murray for her brother’s death. "He was the one that was administering," Janet told host Robin Roberts in an interview that will air Wednesday, November 18. "I think he is responsible." Janet also reminisces about her close childhood with Michael and what happened the last time she saw her brother. "We had a lot of fun, laughing. I was being silly, acting silly," she recalled. "And he was sitting in front of me and just cracking up, laughing at me. I was being loud. And he thought it was so funny." In related news, MTV Networks has acquired the rights to the movie Michael Jackson's This Is It. The film becomes available to MTVN in 2011 with a six-year network window, according to Broadcasting & Cable. MTVN also will collaborate with Sony Pictures in marketing the DVD release of the film, slated for early 2010.
Jay-Z has scrapped the last three shows of his 2009 tour, citing an "unforeseen scheduling conflict." The rapper's road trip of college campuses and arenas was slated to end on November 22 in Austin. However, he has announced a slew of new North American dates for his 2010 BP3 Tour, which is now scheduled to begin with a February 20 show in Ft. Lauderdale. That tour is currently slated to hit 17 cities and run through March 14 in Detroit. In other Hov news, the rapper made a surprise appearance with Rihanna on Monday night at her webcast concert in London to promote her new album, Rated R. Jay rapped his verses on "Run This Town" and "Umbrella."
My Chemical Romance is wrapping up their fourth studio album, due out in the spring. Speaking to Rolling Stone, singer Gerard Way says he wanted to "harness everything that’s great about this band into shorter songs. Almost protopunk, like the Stooges or the MC5." He adds that the new material made them sound like "an American rock band instead of a British rock band." The new album is still untitled.
Slipknot/Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor married girlfriend Stephanie Luby at the Las Vegas Palms Hotel over the weekend, where the wedding party walked down the aisle to Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls." The 350 guests included Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, as well as Camp Freddy's Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison, who acted as the minister. People.com reports that the rockers all took the stage and performed at the wedding, with Taylor joining in on three songs.
Bruce Springsteen’s final show of his 2009 tour on November 22 in Buffalo will include a charity meet & greet. The meet & greet session will benefit The Kristen Ann Carr Fund, which provides grants for cancer research, and the Musicians on Call Organization, which brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. Fans can bid at charitybuzz.com for a chance to snag four tickets in the first five rows of the concert, E-Street Lounge passes and admission to the sound check.
The U.S. Library of Congress is awarding Paul McCartney its third Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, announced Librarian of Congress James Billington. Billington stated that it's hard to think of another performer and composer who has had a more "indelible and transformative effect" on music than McCartney. The prize commemorates George and Ira Gershwin, the legendary American songwriting team whose extensive manuscript collections reside in the Library of Congress. The prize is awarded to musicians whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins. "As a great admirer of the Gershwins’ songs, I am highly honored to be given the Gershwin Prize by such a great institution as the Library of Congress," McCartney said. An all-star tribute concert is planned for early 2010, though the library has not yet announced who will perform.
Todd Rundgren will play his 1973 album A Wizard, A True Star live, start-to-finish, at four shows in California next month. Rundgren brings his AWATS show to San Francisco (12/1), Sacramento (12/1), Los Angeles (12/4) and Ventura (12/5).
