In an interesting turn of events, FMQB has confirmed that Citadel is selling off Spanish Sports KINB (105.3)/Oklahoma City to a group led by DJ Ferris O'Brien, who plan to flip the station back to its previous Modern Rock format. The station was formerly "105.3 The Spy" until its flip in June 2004. O'Brien kept the Spy alive as a specialty show on sister Active Rocker KATT, but has negotiated with Citadel to purchase the station from its Last Bastion Station Trust, which was created after the company's merger with ABC Radio.
"I've been working on this at least since March — actually physically working on this deal," O'Brien told The Oklahoman. "But in all actuality, this has been something I've been thinking about doing, wanting to be doing, for the last 10 years."
The sale has not officially closed yet, with the actual closing date still to be determined. However, the Spy will launch this Monday, November 23. O'Brien is purchasing the station with his own money as well as investments from family members. He told the paper, "I'm not in this specifically to get filthy, stinking rich, where I fill up a bedroom with 100-dollar bills and roll around naked. If that happens, that's great, too. But if I break even and make a good living and can pay the bills and keep it on the air, I know I can do that."
O'Brien has been working on programming the music for the new Spy, and hopes to have former Spy DJ (and ex-Chainsaw Kittens singer) Tyson Meade involved again, even though he now lives in China. Meade is hoping to record a show from the other side of the world for the new Spy.
