November 24, 2009

Michael Jackson collectibles were a hot item at the Julien’s Auctions event at New York’s Hard Rock Café over the weekend. The biggest item on the block was Jackson’s rhinestone-studded glove from the 1983 Motown 25 concert, where he debuted the moonwalk. The iconic glove was expected to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000, but sold for an astounding $420,000 to a buyer in Hong Kong, according to CNN. Jackson’s fedora hat, worn when he kissed then-wife Lisa Marie Presley during the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, sold for $73,800, and a drawing of Charlie Chaplin by the King of Pop, estimated to sell for between $4,000 and $6,000, went for a winning bid of $33,480.

Lady Gaga

Speaking to MTV News about her new release, The Fame Monster, Lady Gaga said the new songs on the expanded release confront her fears. The track "Speechless" was written about her fear of the death of her father. "My mom called me and I was very depressed. I was on tour and I couldn't leave, so I went into the studio and I wrote this song 'Speechless,' and it's about these phone calls," she said. "My dad used to call me after he'd had a few drinks and I wouldn't know what to say. I was speechless and I just feared that I would lose him and I wouldn't be there."

The release date for Usher's new album, Raymond v. Raymond, is being moved, and a new date is still being determined. The album was supposed to come out on December 21, but the date is being changed in order to give Raymond v. Raymond more time for "a proper launch," according to Billboard.com.

Omarion will offer his third solo album, Ollusion, on January 12 via his own Starworld
Entertainment imprint through EMI Label Services. "It's the first record I've put out since [2005's] Touch that has a high-energy dance vibe," Omarion told Billboard.com. "I have a new look and my own label now, so it felt like the right way to kick things off." After the track "I Get It In," his second single, "Speed'n," will be a song he co-produced with production team 253. The album also includes "Hoodie" featuring Jay Rock, and "What Do You Say," a ballad Omarion co-wrote with Chris Brown.

50 Cent has settled his lawsuit against Taco Bell, where the Rapper claimed the chain was using his name without permission in an ad campaign. The New York Post reports the terms of the settlement were confidential, but Fiddy had asked for $4 million in damages. The suit was over an ad campaign where Taco Bell suggested 50 Cent change his name as part of a promotion for their menu items under a dollar.

The second season of Spectacle: Elvis Costello With... debuts on the Sundance Channel on Wednesday, December 9 at 10 p.m. Costello's guests for the premiere are Bono and The Edge of U2. Other guests throughout the season include Sheryl Crow, Neko Case, Nick Lowe and Levon Helm. The January 6 episode features actress Mary Louise Parker interviewing Costello himself and the two-part season finale finds Costello chatting with Bruce Springsteen on January 20 and 27.

Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men will be the celebrity judges for the new NBC a cappella singing competition show, The Sing-Off. Hosted by Nick Lachey, the series debuts on December 14. Folds and Stockman will be joined by a different celebrity guest judge on each episode.

Tommy Lee has assembled a team of drummers called Bezerk that features Red Hot
Chili Pepper Chad Smith, Velvet Revolver’s Matt Sorum, Incubus’ Jose Pasillas, Godsmack’s Sully Erna and more. The group will debut at Guitar Center’s Drum-Off '09 Grand Finals in Los Angeles on January 8. The show will also have Jason Bonham paying tribute to his father, John Bonham, and Tool’s Danny Carey doing an exclusive collaborative performance with Mastodon's Brann Dailor.

The fourth edition of the Bridge School Collection benefit compilation arrives on iTunes today. The collection puts together songs from Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit concerts over the years, going back to 1994 for two tracks from Ministry and to just last year with Death Cab For Cutie and more. The collection also includes a pair of rare solo Trent Reznor performances from 2006.

Speaking to WFAN/New York's Boomer & Carton morning team today, ex-Monkee Peter Tork made a rather surprising revelation. Tork said that he slept with Janis Joplin, who he had been friendly with for many years, and that he had never revealed the story in public before.
