John Mayer (photo: Jim Rinaldi) | John Mayer's fourth studio set earned him his second #1 album, as Battle Studies bows at the top of the chart this week with 286,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The singer/songwriter's first chart-topper came with Heavier Things in 2003, when it started with 317,000. Meanwhile, around the world, Battle Studies earned Mayer his highest Australian debut at #3, while he leads in Holland at #1. Mayer's new album topped the chart in a week rife with new releases, as four other albums debuted in the Top 10. Norah Jones' fourth studio set, The Fall, started at #3 with 180,000 sold. Casting Crowns' Until the Whole World Hears debuted at #4 with 167,000, marking their best sales week ever, and 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct started at #5 with 160,000, giving the rapper his fourth Top 10 set. Teen sensation Justin Bieber arrives at #6 with his seven-song EP, My World, selling 137,000 copies in its first week.
The rest of the Top 10 was filled out by Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas at #2, selling another 185,000, Michael Jackson's This Is It at #7, moving 95,700, the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack at #8 with 93,400, Carrie Underwood's Play On at #9 with 86,200, and Taylor Swift's Fearless at #10 with 84,000.
Outside the Top 10, American Idol champ Kris Allen bowed at #11 with his self-titled debut album, selling 80,000 units. Supergroup Them Crooked Vultures started at #12 with 69,500 copies of their debut, and Leona Lewis' sophomore set, Echo, bowed at #13 with 67,200. Paul McCartney's new live album, Good Evening New York City, earned a #15 start with 55,000 sold. Rounding out the Top 20 are OneRepublic's Waking Up, which bowed at #19 by moving 39,500 units, and Janet Jackson's new greatest hits set, #1's, which entered the chart at #20 with 37,500 sold.
