| Michael Jackson's This Is It Coming To DVD |
 |
November 30, 2009
While the theatrical run of Michael Jackson's This Is It is almost finished, the DVD and Blu-ray editions of the movie will be out on January 26 with plenty of extra footage. The bonuses on the This Is It DVD include an hour of additional footage not seen in theaters, the two documentaries Staging the Return: Beyond The Show and Staging the Return: The Adventure Begins, both about Jackson's plans and preparations for his run of 50 shows in London, and featurettes about the costuming and dancer auditions for the concerts, according to Variety. There also will be a Memories Of Michael piece, in which director Kenny Ortega and the crew of This Is It share personal stories about working with Jackson on the rehearsals. The This Is It Blu-ray will house another 30 minutes of footage not available on the standard DVD, plus the full "Smooth Criminal" vignette that was filmed for Jackson’s planned London concerts. Only portions of the "Smooth Criminal" video were shown in This Is It.
The film has now grossed over $70 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide. It was originally supposed to be in theaters for two weeks only with a DVD release in time for Christmas, but with the theatrical version being so well received, the run was extended into December and the DVD will now be tied in to the surge of music sales that always happens after the Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast on January 31.
As previously reported, MTV, VH1 and all the other music-related channels under the Viacom umbrella have acquired the exclusive television rights to air This Is It starting in 2011. Furthermore, a separate DVD, Life & Times Of the King Of Pop 1958-2009, will include footage of the Los Angeles memorial service for Jackson that was held over the summer. That DVD features appearances from Usher, Janet and Jermaine Jackson, Berry Gordie, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie and others. It is due out December 8.
