Pete Townshend (photo: Jim Rinaldi) | Continuing the recent trend of having Classic Rock artists perform at the Super Bowl, The Who will carry on that tradition this season. The Who will perform during the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show at Dolphin Stadium in Miami on Sunday, February 7. The NFL made the announcement on Thanksgiving during halftime of the Oakland Raiders-Dallas Cowboys game on CBS.
Mariah Carey is expected to release a remixed edition of her latest album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, in February. The remix album could be a Target exclusive, and it will feature collaborations with Swizz Beatz and Tricky Stewart, as well as Trey Songz, R. Kelly, T-Pain, Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman, according to Rap-Up.com. "There's gonna be remixes to everything," Stewart recently told Rap-Up. "I'm actually doing some remixing myself currently 'cause some of these records were so much fun to make. It's easy to go in and do a remix." Norah Jones has announced an extensive 2010 tour in support of her new album, The Fall. The trek begins March 5 in Tulsa, OK and winds up in Atlanta on May 15. Additionally, remixes of two of Jones' new songs will be released online all this week, including remixes from Adrock and Mike D. of the Beastie Boys and Santigold.
Metallica has added tour dates in South America and Eastern Europe in 2010, including four shows in cities the band has never played before. The March leg of the World Magnetic tour kicks off on March 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico, heads to Monterrey, Mexico on March 3, and then over to Guatemala City, Guatemala on March 5. The band will close out this leg of the tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 14, "where we technically have BEEN before, but two or three of you may remember that unfortunately the show scheduled in 1993 was rained out," the band explained on metalllica.com. Furthermore, going on sale the week of December 7 is Orgullo, Pasion y Gloria: Tres Noches En La Ciudad de Mexico, the live DVD recorded over three nights in Mexico City at the Foro Sol Stadium.
After lining up some Canadian tour dates for the beginning of 2010, Guns 'N Roses has now announced a South American jaunt as well. The band's website says only that the tour will last from March 10 to April 10, but no specific dates and cities have been announced. GNR also has four December dates coming up in Southeast Asia, from December 11 in Taipei, Taiwan to December 19 in Tokyo.
The 2009 Soul Train Awards aired Sunday night on the Centric network, after the ceremony was scrapped last year following the writer’s strike. Beyoncé won a trio of awards for Best Female R&B/Soul Artist Female, Song of the Year for "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" and Album Of The Year for I Am… Sasha Fierce. Maxwell was named Best Male R&B/Soul Artist, and the Best New Artist trophy went to Drake. Michael Jackson was posthumously bestowed the Entertainer Of The Year award.
Damon Albarn tells the U.K.'s Guardian that the third official Gorillaz album will be titled Plastic Beach. He revealed a number of guest stars making cameos on the record, including Lou Reed, Mos Def, Barry Gibb and more. As for Albarn's old band Blur, a documentary about their reunion titled No Distance Left To Run will debut overseas in January.
Nine Inch Nails are selling off instruments used by Trent Reznor & co., now that the band has retired from playing live. A number of guitars are now available on eBay, with more instruments, cases, effects pedals and much more to come.
The Strokes will make their return to the stage next summer as one of the headliners of the 2010 Isle Of Wight Festival in the U.K. The band has not played together live since 2006. Also announced for the June festival are Jay-Z, Blondie, Squeeze and P!nk.
Over the holiday weekend, the news broke that Ronie James Dio has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. His wife and manager Wendy Dio posted a message on his website that reads, "We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans. Thanks to all the friends and fans around the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."
Glassnote Records signs Irish band Two Door Cinema Club. The up-and-coming group's debut album is slated for release overseas in February, with a U.S. release date to be announced. "Two Door Cinema Club is one of the most exciting young bands in the world," says Glassnote President Daniel Glass. "We cannot wait for their tour and record in 2010."
