CBS Radio in Pittsburgh has announced that on Monday, February 15, the company will debut Sports Radio "93.7 The Fan," carrying the call letters KDKA-FM. As originally reported last Friday, January 15, the move converts CHR WBZW(B94) to 93.7 The Fan.
CBS Radio SVP & Pittsburgh Market Manager Michael Young exclusively told FMQB, "We’re building this radio station with the sole focus and mantra of providing all sports all the time to the Pittsburgh fans, billing ourselves as the voice of the fans of Pittsburgh."
There have been some central issues that may have strategically led to this decision. CBS operates WZPT (Star 100.7) a mainstream Hot AC station which closely borders the mainstream CHR approach of B94. Too close for comfort could be the call here and a switch to Sports could better balance the CBS-Pittsburgh cluster, which also includes Country outlet WDSY (Y108) and AM News/Talker KDKA.
Young continues, "From a market positioning perspective, both B94 and Star 100.7 sit right next to each other with very limited space because they have competitors on both ends. My analogy is it’s like having a living room in your house with two gigantic sofas that don’t fit right, but what does fit right is one beautiful sectional. We’re taking B94’s popular Hits format and blending it with Star to create one big Pop music station for the audiences that both B and Star have. Star will remain a Hot AC station, with the music and presentation now being a little hotter."
The personnel changes obviously affect B94 as well as Star 100.7. Bubba, from the B94 morning show will be joining the morning show at Star making the new show J.R.,Shelley & Bubba. This reunites Shelley and Bubba who previously worked together on B94. Melanie Taylor, formerly of B94 mornings, will do middays at Star. ScottAlexander, the former midday host on Star will segue to APD/afternoons at the station. Zack, who was doing weekends at B94, will segue to nights at Star, which ran jockless evenings prior to this point.
Departing the CBS Pittsburgh cluster are Kobe (APD/afternoons at B94), Jonny Hartwell (APD/afternoons at Star), Flick (nights at B94), while B94 midday guy Coop is transferring to Detroit to join sister CBS Country station WYCD.
Kobe, who joined the new B94 in November 2007 as the second hire for the station at the time, can reached at: firstname.lastname@example.org or 412-526-8817.
During the interim prior to the February 15 launch date, B94 will continue to play Top 40 hits while cross promoting Star 100.7. B94 was reactivated as a CHR on October 5, 2007. The station’s first venture with CHR ran 1981-2003.
