Wyclef, Mary J. Blige Rock SOS Telethon
February 8, 2010

During Friday night's SOS: Help For Haiti telethon, more music stars came out in force to encourage donations and support for the earthquake-ravaged nation. Hosts Queen Latifah, Pharrell and Diddy led the proceedings from Miami's American Airlines Arena, as the two-hour telethon aired live on BET, MTV, VH1 and Centric, and was simulcast in Haiti. Wyclef Jean, who has become a vocal spokesman for his home country of Haiti, opened the show with a lively performance of "Hold On" with Mavado, and he also brought out Haitian MCs to rap along. Later in the show, Wyclef did another energetic mini-set that boasted him and Akon performing "Sweetest Girl."

There were many other collaborations on the night, such as Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan belting out "We Gonna Make It," Justin Bieber and Ludacris uniting for "Baby," and Nas and Damian Marley doing their new song, "The Strong Will Continue," from their upcoming album Distant Relatives. Robin Thicke crooned Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me," and Keri Hilson was on hand to perform her hit "Knock You Down." Busta Rhymes also delivered a brand-new song that he wrote about Haiti, and Chris Brown took the stage for "Crawl" and "With You."

The show ended with Diddy, Queen Latifah and Pharrell saying good night before generating a sing-a-long of "Lean on Me," for which most of the night's other performers came onstage, as did stars such as Brian McKnight, Sean Kingston and Gloria Estefan.
Former President Bill Clinton even spoke during the event, explaining that help for Haiti needs to be a continuous effort. "We've still got a lot to do to get the people of Haiti back so they don't have to worry about day-to-day," Clinton said. "Those people deserve our help. They can have a better future, and you can give it to them."

Proceeds from Friday's telethon will go to Yele Haiti, CARE, Project Medishare, Children's Safe Drinking Water and The Clinton Foundation.

In related news, Miley Cyrus has organized a charity auction on eBay to benefit the Red Cross and its efforts to help Haiti. Fans can bid on the Herve Leger dress that Cyrus wore to the Grammy Awards last month, and two tickets to the Hollywood premiere of her upcoming film, The Last Song. A message on eBay.com/Miley says that the auction also will include tickets to Hugh Jackman's next movie premiere, Whoopi Goldberg's tennis shoes and Demi Lovato's tour wardrobe. Nicole Richie also has donated jewelry and Britney Spears offered the silver Versace dress she wore to the 2008 MTV VMAs. "Ever since the earthquake, I've been trying to do my part to help the people of Haiti — and I wanted to do more," Cyrus told People. "I want to get people involved and show that even the little things you can do can make a difference."
