After numerous delays, Lil Wayne was finally sentenced today for weapons charges stemming from a 2007 incident in New York. The rapper was originally set to be sentenced last month, but his attorney requested a delay so he could undergo eight root canals. Then, when it looked like Wayne would surely go to jail last Tuesday, a fire broke out at the Manhattan Criminal Court Building, the building was evacuated and all appearances were postponed. The next day, Weezy's court date was once again rescheduled for March 8.
This afternoon, dressed in black jeans, a black shirt and a gray jacket, Wayne appeared before Judge Charles H. Solomon, who sentenced the rapper to a year in prison for attempted gun possession. After Solomon reminded Wayne of his charges, the rapper firmly nodded that he understood. Police then handcuffed Wayne and he stood up to be taken away, according to MTV News. The rapper had already reached a deal with prosecutors in November to plead out to a lesser charge, and in return, he is expected to be released from prison as early as October.
Before going to jail, Wayne spent his unexpected free time partying in New York City, traveling back to his Miami home, and recording. As previously reported, he performed with Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden last week, and he also filmed a slew of music videos to keep him in the public eye while he is behind bars. In a video sent to MTV News, Weezy said he filmed seven videos in one night including footage for Young Money artist Shanell, Diddy, Travie McCoy from Gym Class Heroes, Rick Ross, Drake and himself. The Drake video is for "Afrika Boombata" and the McCoy video is called "Tattoo Girl."
