Interactive online radio service Slacker is reportedly planning an on-demand subscription service, which could launch later in 2010. According to Wired's sources, the new Slacker service will combine aspects of Pandora, Rhapsody and Spotify. In addition to marking songs as favorites, listeners can also subscribe to hear their favorite song on-demand at any time.
Slacker believes that other subscription services' free tiers are insufficient enough to bring in new customers, due to the high cost of licensing songs for on-demand streaming#
Slacker currently has a free version that allows users to request songs, with the ability to upgrade to an ad-free version and more control over the music, for $5/month#
In addition to on-demand song access, the new version of Slacker will reportedly allow for further control over creating your own station. Wired says that users could create a station that only plays their favorite two artists, "further blurring the line between streaming radio and a music collection."
Wired's sources did not have a launch date or expected price point for the new on-demand service.
