WFNX Brand To Live On As Internet Radio Station
June 26, 2012

Yesterday it was announced that The Boston Globe's Boston.com had hired a number of WFNX/Boston alumni to launch a new, online-only Modern Rock radio station under the Boston.com umbrella. However, in the deal to sell 'FNX to Clear Channel, its owner Phoenix Media/Communications Group kept the intellectual property of the seminal Modern Rocker and was expected to keep the brand name alive following the sale. This morning Phoenix announced that WFNX would live on as an Internet station as well.

In a statement prefaced by: "So . . . it's been an odd day to say the least. We'll have more announcements shortly, but in the meantime: here's the official announcement of what we're up to -- and a few choice details about what's coming up soon," it was confirmed that 'FNX will remain online after the Clear Channel deal closer.

According to the announcement, "Listeners can expect the online stream to include the same quality programming that has made WFNX legendary on the airwaves: cutting-edge music that introduces listeners to their new favorite bands. In the weeks to come, WFNX will be unveiling on-air programming that celebrates WFNX's nearly 30-year history, including special guests and format-busting programs."

"We are excited to be able to maintain a unique, independent spirit and a commitment to serving the greater Boston and New England community with the best there is in new music," says Stephen Mindich, Founder and CEO of The Phoenix Media/Communications Group. "With insightful, entertaining programming, WFNX will continue to live online.  We haven’t missed a beat and we look forward to announcing more exciting news and developments around our new online broadcast in the coming weeks."

'FNX announce announced its calendar of upcoming programming:

•    Listener / Band Takeovers, Monday 6/25 – Friday 6/29 @ 9am, 1pm and 7pm
Listeners and Bands will take over the airwaves and play their favorite WFNX songs

•    Z to A Countdown, Monday 7/2 – Wednesday 7/4
WFNX.com will revisit history and artists that were integral over the years

•    WFNX Rewind, Thursday 7/5 – Friday – 7/20
WFNX on-air personalities (from 1983 – 2012) will return to host shows throughout the month

•    101.7 FM Sendoff Party, Saturday 7/21
Special guests will be live in the studio. Bands will return to play live in the green room.
