Linkin Park Lands Fifth #1 Album
July 5, 2012

Linkin Park
It was a close race between Linkin Park and Maroon 5 on the album chart this week, but LP came away victorious as they sold 223,000 copies of Living Things for a #1 debut. Maroon 5 bowed at #2 with Overexposed, shifting 222,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Linkin Park's Living Things secures the band its fifth #1 album. In the span of time since 2000, when Linkin Park first debuted on the chart, no other band has had more chart-topping albums, according to Billboard.com. Maroon 5's Overexposed is the band's fourth studio album and it follows 2010's Hands All Over, which also bowed at #2 by selling 142,000 in its first week.

Last week's top album, Justin Bieber's Believe, slipped to #3 this week wit 115,000 sold, and the Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made 2 compilation debuts at #4 with 98,000. The new effort includes Wale's current hit, "Bag of Money," featuring Maybach label chief Rick Ross, along with Meek Mill and T-Pain. Right behind Self Made 2 at #5 is R. Kelly, who debuts his latest album, Write Me Back, with 68,000 sold. It marks his 14th Top 10 album and follows 2011's Love Letter, which launched at #6 with 154,000.

As for the rest of the top 10, Kenny Chesney's Welcome to the Fishbowl is #6 with 61,000, Adele's 21 is #7 with 42,000, and One Direction's Up All Night is in the #8 slot with 39,000 sold. Usher's Looking 4 Myself slides down to #9 this week with 36,000 and the Rock of Ages soundtrack sits at #10 with 28,000.

Nielsen SoundScan also released its mid-year sales numbers for 2012, and Adele's 21 and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) are the year's biggest selling album and digital song in the U.S., respectively. 21 has moved 3.69 million copies this year, and "Somebody" has sold 5.50 million downloads. Through the sales week that ended on July 1, the half-way point of SoundScan's tracking year, 21 is the only album that has sold more that 1 million copies this year. The next biggest selling album is Lionel Richie's Tuskegee, which has moved 912,000, followed by One Direction's Up All Night, with 899,000. Meanwhile,
"Somebody That I Used to Know" is one of two titles that have shifted 5 million digital copies in 2012. fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) is the other, with 5.09 million.
