American Idol winner Phillip Phillips' single "Home" hit #1 on the iTunes sales chart, as well as Billboard's Digital Songs chart this week, thanks to NBC's use of the song in its Summer Olympics coverage. "Home" has been used by the network as the theme song for its women's gymnastics coverage. With 227,527 downloads this week, "Home" jumped from #47 to #1 on the Digital Songs chart, a 472 percent increase. Following Phillips' Idol win, "Home" debuted in June on the Digital Songs chart at #2 with 278,000 downloads sold.
Morning shows around the country are playing customized versions of "Home" mixing in Olympic highlights. Entercom CHR WFBC/Greensville was the first station to do so, and then many other stations are also airing custom versions including Clear ChannelCHR outlet WHTZ (Z100) in New York City where their version is garnering such strong audience reaction, it is in rotation in all dayparts.
"Home" was heard during the U.S. Women's Team's Gold medal-winning gymnastics performance and will be used in NBC's closing ceremonies coverage as well. The track also grabbed ten new adds at Hot AC this week.
Phillips will appear on the Today Show on August 28 and Live With Kelly on September 4, and is currently out on the road with the American Idoltour until September 11.
