Taylor Swift will hit the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, September 6, for the debut live performance of a new song from her upcoming fourth studio album, Red. Swift joins previously announced performers Green Day, P!nk, Alicia Keys and One Direction for the show, which will be hosted by comedian Kevin Hart. MTV also revealed the first batch of award presenters, including Wiz Khalifa, Miley Cyrus, Mac Miller and Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnasts Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross.
Meanwhile, Swift's Red album drops on October 22, and the first single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," is already setting digital sales records. Billboard.com reports that the track, released Monday, August 13, will have moved more than 600,000 downloads by the end of the Nielsen SoundScan tracking week, which wrapped on August 19. When the final tally is revealed, "Never" will likely earn the largest sales week ever for a song by a female artist. The current female record is held by Ke$ha's "TiK ToK," which sold 610,000 in a week, and the record for the largest digital sales week overall belongs to Flo Rida's "Right Round," which debuted with 636,000 the week of February 28, 2009.
"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is also making quite an impact on multiple Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay charts. The song launches on Pop Songs at #18, Adult Pop Songs at #21, Adult Contemporary at #16 and Country Songs at #13. On the Pop Songs chart, "Never" starts with the fifth-best opening rank since the chart began in 1992. The format's four higher arrivals also belong to women: Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" (No. 12, 1993), Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (No. 14, 2011), Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" (No. 16, 2011); and Madonna's "Frozen" (No. 16, 1998).
In other news, Swift's episode of VH1's Storytellers will air on November 11. She will tape the show in front of a group of contest winners, and students at any accredited high school or college in the continental U.S. can enter for the chance to win the opportunity to have her tell her tales and perform for them.
