Liberty Media Adds 40 Million More Shares Of SiriusXM
August 29, 2012
Liberty Media has added another 40 million shares of SiriusXM, as the private equity company continues to grow its stake in the satcaster. Seeking Alpha reports that there was a large amount of SiriusXM stock traded over the past few days, with over 100 million shares traded on Monday alone. This traffic was driven by Liberty, which bought 40,460,803 shares.
This latest purchase brings Liberty to a 48.8 percent stake in SiriusXM, as John Malone's company inches closer to a majority share of the satcaster. Seeking Alpha notes that despite all this activity, SiriusXM's price remained fairly steady, closing at almost an identical price each day. As of 11am ET today, SiriusXM was trading at $2.54/each. Liberty is now essentially under 100 million shares away from de jure control of SiriusXM.
Last week, shareholders of SiriusXMsued the company's directors over the impending majority stock takeover by Liberty. The shareholders claim the satcaster's directors have not done enough to protect the company from Liberty's potential takeover.
