One Direction Rules MTV VMAs
September 7, 2012

One Direction
At Thursday night's MTV Video Music Awards, British boy band One Direction came away as the night's biggest winner with three trophies, which they earned for Best New Artist, Best Pop Video for "What Makes You Beautiful," and the fan-voted social media category, Most Share-Worthy Video. Chris Brown won two VMA Moonmen for Best Male Video and Best Choreography for "Turn up the Music," while M.I.A. also earned two awards for Best Direction and Best Cinematography for "Bad Girls." However, it was Rihanna who won the most coveted prize of the evening when "We Found Love" was named Video of the Year.

Rihanna also opened the show, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, with a sultry performance of "Cockiness (Love It)" featuring A$AP Rocky.  She then turned the arena into a dance party with "We Found Love," along with her producer Calvin Harris, who won a VMA of his own for Best Electronic Dance Music Video. Other notable performances came from P!nk, who hung from a flying trapeze as she offered her latest hit, "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," and R&B singer Frank Ocean, who gave an intimate performance of his single "Thinking Of You." Up-and-coming rapper 2 Chainz took the VMA stage for the first time ever, and together with Lil Wayne, ignited the audience with a performance of "Yuck," followed by Weezy's new single "No Worries." Billie Joe Armstrong seemed totally recovered from dehydration as Green Day rocked out to their new song "Let Yourself Go," and Alicia Keys premiered her new single, "Girl on Fire."
Taylor Swift closed out the evening with a fun performance of her smash, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," flanked by a team of backup dancers as they paraded down the stage with a shower of flower petals raining on the wall of hi-def screens behind them.

Other winners on the night included Nicki Minaj for Best Female Video for "Starships," Drake and Lil Wayne for Best Hip-Hop Video for "HYFR," Coldplay for Best Rock Video for "Paradise" and Demi Lovato for Best Video with a Message for "Skyscraper."
