Nicki Minaj, Rihanna Lead 2012 American Music Award Nominees

Nicki Minaj and Rihanna lead the nominees for the 2012 American Music Awards, which will be handed out November 18 on ABC. This year's AMAs are the 40th edition of the awards show. Christina Aguilera joined the show's producers today in Los Angeles to announce the nominees. Aguilera is also the first performed announced for the show.

Minaj is up for Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock, Favorite Album - Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop and Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop. Rihanna is nominated for Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock, Favorite Female Artist - Soul/R&B and Favorite Album - Soul/R&B.

Drake, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, One Direction and Usher each scored three AMA nominations. Chris Brown, Luke BryanKelly Clarkson, J. Cole, fun., Gotye, Katy Perry, Pitbull and Carrie Underwood were all nominated in two categories. There are 20 AMA categories this year, including a new EDM award. Bieber, Drake, Maroon 5, Perry and Rihanna are all up for the top American Music Award, Artist of the Year.

Winners of the 40th annual American Music Awards will be determined by fans voting online at amavote.com.
