Quick Hits: 12/12/12 Benefit Concert, Fleetwood Mac, Rick Ross, Academy Award for Best Song, ZZ Top, Ravi Shankar
December 12, 2012

Excitement is building for tonight's 12/12/12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, as Roger Waters has confirmed that he'll perform with Eddie Vedder, and Paul McCartney will perform with the surviving members of Nirvana. Rolling Stone reports that the official rundown for the concert has the show closing out with a performance from Paul McCartney alongside "Dave Grohl & Friends," as well as Jazz singer Diana Krall. The "Friends" in question are expected to be Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. On Twitter, Novoselic apparently confirmed rumors that McCartney and Grohl had written a new song together, which will debut tonight. He wrote, "It is a new song that's kind of Helter Skelter meets Scentless Apprentice. It rocks with a heavy groove."
Waters said on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon: "We're doing a little bit of The Wall and a little bit of Dark Side of the Moon," including "Money," "Us and Them" and "Comfortably Numb" with help from Vedder. The concert also will feature the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, The Who, Kanye West, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, and Coldplay's Chris Martin. It benefits The Robin Hood Relief Fund.

Fleetwood Mac

More details have emerged about the 35th anniversary edition of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, which will come out in conjunction with the band's 2013 tour. A three-disc expanded edition will include the original album, a dozen unreleased live recordings from the group's 1977 world tour, and a disc of unreleased takes from the recording sessions for Rumours. A separate deluxe version includes everything in the expanded edition, plus an additional disc of outtakes, a DVD of the 1977 documentary The Rosebud Film and a copy of the album on vinyl. Both versions are due January 29 via Rhino Records.

Rick Ross is moving his label, Maybach Music Group, from Warner Bros. to Atlantic Records. Ross confirmed the news in an interview with 99 Jamz/Miami when he said:  "I'm excited for this year we got coming up. This is really huge. MMG, we just merged with Atlantic Records. It's the biggest move of the year. We gonna leave it right there. I'm signed as a solo artist to Def Jam. And Meek Mill, Wale, we all MMG at the end of the day." The move comes days after Ross cancelled the second leg of his Maybach Music Group tour, reportedly due to a conflict with his promoter and not due to gang threats, which was previously rumored.

Adele, The Black Keys and Arcade Fire are among 75 artists who are on the list for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The songs that make the final cut will be announced at the nominations ceremony on January 10. Adele is being considered for her theme to the latest James Bond movie, "Skyfall," while the Black Keys contributed "Baddest Man Alive" to The Man With the Iron Fists, and Arcade Fire did "Abraham's Daughter" for The Hunger Games soundtrack. Others listed include Fiona Apple's "Dull Tool" from This Is 40; Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" from her documentary/concert film Part of Me; Norah Jones' "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from Ted; Mumford & Sons' "Learn Me Right" from Brave; Karen O's "Strange Love" from Frankenweenie and Liz Phair's "Dotted Line" from People Like Us.

ZZ Top is offering their signed gear on eBay to support homeless veterans. Items such as Dusty Hill's Precision Bass, Billy Gibbons' Stratocaster and Frank Beard's Drumhead are up for grabs. The final sale price will support 1Matters.org - Veterans Matter.

Famed sitar player and World music star Ravi Shankar has died at the age of 92, following heart valve replacement surgery last week. Shankar is known for being a huge influence over The Beatles, and he was dubbed the "godfather of World music" by George Harrison, who collaborated with Shankar for the 1971 benefit Concert For Bangladesh. In more recent years, Shankar also was known for being the father of Norah Jones. He will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
