Quick Hits: Dave Grohl's Sound City Players, Album Sales, Volbeat, Sevendust, Airborne Toxic Event, Jim James, Jessica Simpson, Billy Bragg

A lot of news has been trickling out about Dave Grohl's Sound City documentary film and the live performances surrounding it. Yesterday, Grohl's Sound City Players announced a gig at the Hollywood Paladium on January 31. The all-star band also will be playing at Utah's Sundance Film Festival on January 18, where the movie will premiere. Now, another song from the film's soundtrack has been revealed. The track, "From Can To Can't," features singer Corey Taylor, bassist Scott Reeder of Kyuss and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen on guitar. Check it out below:

Christian Singer/songwriter Chris Tomlin claims his first #1 album on the sales chart this week as his Burning Lights opens atop the list with 73,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. One step behind Tomlin is Rock band Hollywood Undead, who opens at #2 with its highest charting album ever, Notes From the Underground, selling 53,000. The Les Miserables soundtrack slips to #3 with 52,000, while Taylor Swift's Red falls one rung to #4 with 49,000. Rounding out the top five is the Pitch Perfect soundtrack with 45,000 units sold.

Danish band Volbeat is in the studio recording a new album for release in the spring. Titled Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, the sessions are being produced by Rob Caggiano, alongside Jacob Hansen. Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies will be released this spring on Vertigo/Republic Records. Frontman Michael Poulsen reveals, "We're back in the studio, this time breaking some of our old habits and this sometimes means leaving our comfort zone. We are recording in a new environment, producing with a new set up breaking new sonic ground and it's exciting! Together with our long time collaborator Jacob Hansen we also have the honor of having producer Rob Caggiano on board in the producer's seat. Expect lots of surprises and some of our most rocking heavy songs to date. We feel more than ever that we are taking the Volbeat sound to another level without changing what we're all about." The band returns to North America for a tour starting on March 6 in Dallas, with Danko Jones on the bill as well.

Sevendust has added a slew of new tour dates to their previously-announced headlining trek with Lacuna Coil that starts February 2 in Winston-Salem, NC. Now, Sevendust also will team up with Coal Chamber for a co-headlining tour starting March 28 in Tempe, AZ and concluding April 28 in Dallas. In addition, a handful of shows with Candlelight Red will start March 15 in New Orleans. All this touring comes in support of Sevendust's ninth studio album, Black Out The Sun, due March 26 via 7Bros. Records.

The Airborne Toxic Event has premiered a new single, "Timeless," via XXX. "Timeless" heralds the arrival of TATE's third album, Such Hot Blood, which is due this spring. The band has a handful of tour dates planned for now, including a short run from March 30 in San Diego to April 11 in San Francisco.

Jim James of My Morning Jacket will be hitting the road solo to support his upcoming album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, beginning in February. So far dates are set for February 18 in Philadelphia, February 19 in Brooklyn and February 21 in New York City.

Jessica Simpson is set to star in a television pilot in development for NBC that is loosely based on her life, executive producer Ben Silverman told Reuters. Simpson will portray a celebrity who must balance life as a mother and a public figure. The singer/actress gave birth to her first child in May 2012 and said last month that she was pregnant with her second.

Singer/songwriter Billy Bragg has announced the March 19 release of his tenth album, Tooth & Nail, his first since 2008's Mr. Love and Justice. The album was produced by Joe Henry and will be released via Cooking Vinyl. This time around, Bragg's 12 tracks were inspired by personal events rather than political. "Most people, when they hear my name, think of polemical anthems born in struggle," says Bragg. "I often find myself having to remind people that I am also the Sherpa of Heartbreak, writing songs about the struggle to maintain our relationships with those we love the most." Bragg's seven-week North American tour kicks off at SXSW in March and will take him throughout the U.S. and Canada until May.
