Cox Settles With Todd "MJ" Schnitt; Trial With Bubba The Love Sponge Moves Forward
January 16, 2013
One aspect of Todd "MJ" Schnitt's legal issues with Bubba The Love Sponge and Cox Radio has come to a close, as the Tampa Bay Times reports Schnitt and Cox came to a settlement on Friday. Schnitt had filed a defamation suit against Bubba and Cox, which owns Talk WHPT (104.5 The Bone)/Tampa. The suit accuses Bubba of "false, highly offensive and defamatory statements” about Schitt and his wife Michelle, during their time as morning radio competitors in the Tampa market. Terms of the settlement were kept confidential.
Keith Lawless, Market Manager for Cox Radio-Tampa, told the paper that the settlement doesn't indicate a lack of support for Bubba's position, and added that Cox's attorney is now helping the morning jock's lawyers during the trial. "(The settlement) was a business decision, but in no way reflects that we are not in support of Bubba," said Lawless, who added that he plans to attend as much of the court proceedings as possible. "It's not such a bad thing that all our focus is now on defending Bubba."
Meanwhile, the Times also reports that six jurors and four alternates were chosen on Tuesday for the Schnitt-Bubba trial itself. The lawsuit dates back to 2008, when Schnitt was heard on WFLZ-AM.
