Quick Hits: Dave Grohl's Sound City Players, Drake, Carolina Rebellion, Stone Sour, Jay-Z, RNDM, SXSW, Pitchfork Music Festival, Morrissey
February 1, 2013

Dave Grohl's Sound City Players are coming to the Big Apple, as the all-star band will play the Hammerstein Ballroom on February 13. The Sound City Players performed at the Palladium in Los Angeles last night, following a screening of the Sound City documentary. Much like their concert at the Sundance Film Festival, the Foo Fighters served as the core of the lineup all night, with guests such as Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic. Sound City is now available to purchase online as a digital download, and will be screening in selected cities this weekend as well.

Drake is up for three trophies at this year's Grammy Awards on February 10, but he will also celebrate the night by releasing a new single. Billboard.com confirmed that Drake will release his first single off his forthcoming third album, and the song is titled "Started From the Bottom." Other details are sparse, but Cash Money Records co-CEO Bryan "Birdman" Williams told Billboard that, "This year we got something in store. We got a new record coming out this year. It's just one of those nights that, after seeing each other together, that’ll be like the highlight of our night, the highlight of our life, the highlight of our year."

The Carolina Rebellion Festival, set to take place May 4 and 5 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC, has revealed its band lineup. This year's event will boast headliners such as Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, as well as Limp Bizkit, Rise Against, Bush, Deftones, 3 Doors Down, Three Days Grace and Papa Roach, Bullet For My Valentine, Buckcherry, Volbeat, Halestorm, Asking Alexandria, All That Remains, Steel Panther, Device (with David Draiman), Hollywood Undead, Sick Puppies, In This Moment, Escape The Fate, Pop Evil, Nonpoint, Otherwise, Aranda, Thousand Foot Krutch, Red Line Chemistry, Young Guns, Tracer, American Fangs and Heaven's Basement.

Stone Sour will release House of Gold & Bones Pt. 2, the second part of their two album series, via Roadrunner Records on April 9. The first single from House of Gold & Bones Pt. 2, "Do Me A Favor," will be available digitally on February 12.

Jay-Z is reportedly working on the soundtrack for a new film adaptation of the musical Annie. The film will be set in the modern day and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are producing it through their Overbrook Entertainment banner, according to Entertainment Weekly. Perhaps the music is not too much of a stretch for Jay, since he previously sampled "It's the Hard-Knock Life" in his 1998 track "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)."

After a fall tour last year, Jeff Ament's RNDM side project is considering adding more winter dates and recording some new material. However, the band's long-term schedule may depend on Ament's schedule with Pearl Jam, since PJ recently had a meeting with producer Brendan O'Brien to follow up on some previous recording sessions. They also announced a pair of summer dates. "There's a lot of ideas kind of floating around right now," Ament told Rolling Stone. "I mean, the cool thing about taking a year away from [Pearl Jam] is, we could almost start from scratch and it wouldn't really be that big of a deal, you know? I hope it comes out this year at some point. But, if it doesn't, we have another RNDM record ready. If RNDM's my band for the next year, I'm stoked."

The South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival has announced that this year's 2013 festival will be screening the world premieres of numerous documentaries on high-profile musicians. Green Day will be seen in the world premiere of Broadway Idiot (directed by Doug Hamilton) showing the world the behind-the-curtain ventures of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong with the Broadway show based on American Idiot. Green Day will also be seen in the making-of documentary inside their trilogy of albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!; the film is appropriately entitled ¡Cuatro! (directed by Tim Wheeler). Other bands that will be shown in the SXSW festival include Snoop Dogg in Reincarnated, Dave Grohl's Sound City and Jared Leto from Thirty Seconds to Mars in Artifact. There will be a total of 109 feature films – with 69 world premiers – shown at the festival, documenting a plethora of genres and musicians. The festival will be held from March 8-16 in Austin, TX. Full information on what films are being screened is available on their website.

The Pitchfork Music Festival announced Björk, Belle & Sebastian and R Kelly as the headliners for this year's event. The festival takes place July 19-21 at Chicago's Union Park. The full lineup, which will contain over 40 artists, will be announced in coming weeks. Single day and three-day pases are available on their website.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Morrissey was hospitalized for a bleeding ulcer that resulted in numerous cancelations of U.S. tour dates. Moz has released a comment on his health to the fansite True-to-You saying, "The reports of my death have been greatly understated. Once admitted to the William Beaumont Hospital at Royal Oak in Michigan, I received treatment for concussion, a bleeding ulcer, and Barrett's esophagus," he jokingly added, "The positive from all of this is that there are now no known ailments left for me to try." Morrissey stated that he is determined to not be held back by any health issues, and that fully intends to resume the tour on February 9 in Las Vegas. With full gusto, he added, "If there's an audience of any kind in attendance, I just might die with a smile on my face, after all. If I am not there, I shall probably never again be anywhere."
