Tom Petty Announces 2013 Tour, Talks New Album
February 28, 2013

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have expanded their 2013 touring plans, announcing residencies in New York City and Los Angeles, as well as a number of festival and other headlining dates. Petty and his band will play five shows at New York's Beacon Theatre between May 20-26, then six gigs at the Fonda Theatre in L.A. between June 3-11. The trek officially begins in Evansville, IN on May 16, with dates announced up to June 29 in Minneapolis. Along the way, Petty will also play the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama; Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN and the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE.

Petty discusses his upcoming plans in a new Rolling Stone interview, saying the residencies in smaller venues are "a good thing to do every now and then," he contends. "It gets the band members in tune with each other in a way that you don't get on a big tour. There's a different challenge than you're used to. We got together the other night, the band and I, and everybody is up for this. There's no telling what we'll do."

Petty and the Heartbreakers have also been recording a new album, and are considering debuting some new songs along the way. The band will return to the studio in July and hope to release the new record in 2014."I'd rather people heard the record before we perform the songs," Petty says. "But I also like the songs and want to play them. If they're sounding really good and I get the okay from the head office, I'll do it."

He told Rolling Stone that the new material is "kind of like [2010]'s Mojo – to a new power. It's not as strict to the blues as that one is. But everything comes from the blues, and we've found something new – a new way to stamp the blues."
