The pros and cons of FM chip activation in mobile devices has been one of the key topics at the NAB Show in Las Vegas this week. On Wednesday, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam told NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith that activating FM radio access was considered a minor issue to his company's customers. McAdam added that Verizon customers are more interested in customizable, streaming services.
On the other hand, FCC Commissioners Ajit Pai and Jessica Rosenworcel spoke out in favor of FM chips on mobile phones at the NAB Show. Radio Ink reports that Rosenworcel said that over time, consumers will access FM signals on their phones more often, and therefore create a greater demand for them from phone manufacturers. Meanwhile, Pai noted that FM access on mobile devices would be useful "especially during emergencies."
