As expected, Spotify announced today that the streaming music service now is available for free to IOS and Android smartphone and tablet owners. Previously, mobile users could only access Spotify via its paid options, while desktop owners could stream from the service for free.
However, the free tier of mobile service does not work on-demand, a la the desktop version. Instead, users will only be able to shuffle songs on their playlists or albums. The on-demand aspect of Spotify was the reason it could not previously offer a free option on mobile, according to CNet.
"Today we’re giving people the best free music experience in the history of the smartphone and the tablet," said DanielEk, CEO/Founder at Spotify. "Whether you’re going to the gym, or having a party with friends. Just sit back and let Spotify serve you great music for every moment of your life."
