Quick Hits: Golden Globe Awards, Linkin Park & Offspring, Prince, Backstreet Boys, Eddie Vedder, Aaron Lewis, Damon Albarn
December 12, 2013

Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, U2 and Coldplay will go head-to-head for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Original Song from a Motion Picture. Timberlake's song from Inside Llewyn Davis, Swift's track from One Chance, Coldplay's closing credits tune from Hunger Games: Catching Fire and U2's "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom were all nominated in the category, along with the Idina Menzel tune "Let It Go" from the Disney movie Frozen. The Golden Globes will be handed out on January 12.

Linkin Park

Linkin Park and the Offspring will play a fundraiser in Los Angeles on January 11 to benefit victims of the Philippines' Typhoon Haiyan. The rockers will put on the Concert for the Philippines at Club Nokia, with more artists to be announced in the coming weeks. The benefit will raise money for Music For Relief, a disaster aid charity founded by members of Linkin Park.

Prince is rumored to be making an appearance on the Fox sitcom New Girl, according to music news site Dr. Funkenberry. Reportedly the plot to the episode was pitched to the show by Prince himself. The episode is expected to be New Girl's post-Super Bowl show in February. Though there hasn't been a formal announcement yet, Prince's @3RDEYEGIRL Twitter account re-tweeted the news, and cast member Hannah Simone tweeted "Big Deal Alert! Exciting news coming tomorrow....." It would be Prince's first-ever appearance on a sitcom.

The week of December 16, Backstreet Boys will be taking over VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live to do interviews, play games with host Carrie Keagan and have daily performances of their new songs and classic hits. In other news, BSB also will perform at this year's Christmas In Washington annual holiday special. Christmas in Washington, which airs on December 20 on TNT, is a holiday tradition benefiting the Children's National Medical Center, and is attended each year by the President and First Lady. The evening also will see performances by Sheryl Crow, Anna Kendrick, Janelle MonŠe and Pat Monahan.

Eddie Vedder will do an eight-date, six-city solo tour of Australia after Pearl Jam wraps up its headlining stint on the Big Day Out festival. Pearl Jam will headline Big Day Out in Australia and New Zealand from January 17 to February 2, and then Vedder's solo dates start on February 7 in Perth.

Staind frontman Aaron Lewis has announced a winter/spring leg for his current solo tour. It will kick off on January 18 in Quapaw, OK and run through April 26 in Montpelier, LA. Lewis has been touring in support of his Country album, The Road.

Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn posted a 21-second YouTube video that says his first solo album will be coming in 2014. The details about his solo work are scarce, but in a May interview with Rolling Stone, Albarn said the album is "sort of folk soul" and will feature "rhythmic" work from XL Recordings owner Richard Russell.
