Nielsen has released its list of the top ten radio format preferences of 2013, though it calls the list its "Top 10 Audio Formats" of the year. The company notes that "In 2013 we have seen Country grow among younger listeners and set all-time highs for audience shares across the 48 Nielsen portable people meter (PPM) markets; Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (Pop CHR) mature by increasing its listening share in the 25-54 demographic; spoken word (News/Talk and Sports) made a big rebound during the fall; and both Urban Contemporary and Hot Adult Contemporary had banner years—among their best ever."
News/Talk was the #1 format of the year, with a 9.3 percent share of Persons 6+, followed by CHR with an 8.2 percent share. Country was ranked third with a 7.8 share, just ahead of AC with a 7.7 share. Hot AC was ranked #5 with a 5.5 percent share of Persons 6+ listening.
Classic Hits was the sixth-ranked format with a 5.3 percent share, followed by Urban AC with a five share. Sports was ranked #8 with a 4.3 share, tied with Classic Rock. Mexican Regional was ranked tenth with a 3.9 percent share
