Cumulus Media announced this morning that it has taken over operations of Merlin Media's Chicago stations: Rock WLUP (The Loop) and Adult Hits WIQI (i101), as well as Modern Rock WKQX-LP (Q87.7). According to Cumulus, the company has taken over the stations' operations with an option to buy. Terms of the deal was not disclosed.
Cumulus will moved the Modern Rock format from the Low Power power 87.7 signal back to its longtime home of 101.1, flipping WIQI. Merlin famously flipped the heritage Modern Rocker Q101 to News/Talk in 2011, and then brought the format back on 87.7 about a year later. The changeover will happen next week, with a simulcast on 87.7 and 101.1 slated for a month. Cumulus has no plans to change the format of The Loop.
Cumulus already owns two stations in Chicago: News/Talk WLS-AM and Classic Hits WLS-FM.
