Speaking on Thursday's conference call discussing Emmis' fiscal Q3, Jeff Smulyan spoke about the NextRadio project with Sprint, which puts FM radio on mobile phones. As part of the partnership, the radio industry is required to pay out $3.75 million per quarter to Sprint. Smulyan says that only $2.2 million was paid in December, adding that he isn't worried about the issue, though he did note that some of the larger broadcasters have yet to pay the mobile company. He attributed the delay to "some timing issues."
Smulyan added that he was personally involved in making sure the payments are collected for Sprint, and also noted that automakers have been reacting positively to NextRadio.
As previously reported earlier this week, the NextRadio app has reached over 110,000 downloads, as more than 6,000 FM stations have been tuned in to via the app. There have also been more than 60,000 hours of listening via the NextRadio app for mobile phones.
