Linkin Park will headline MTV's first ever MTV Fan Fest, set to take place in conjunction with the San Diego Comic Con in July. mtvU will also hold its all-new Fandom Awards as part of the festivities, set for July 24 at the San Diego Padres' Petco Park. "In addition to handing out trophies, we will recognize the achievements of fans and their favorite obsessions with special surprises and experiences. It’s the perfect event to reward the fans at Comic-Con, the epicenter of all fandoms." A one-hour special will air on mtvU on Sunday, July 27.
A judge has awarded the Beastie Boys a $1.7 million settlement in their lawsuit against Monster Energy, over the company's unauthorized use of their music in an online promotional video. According to multiple reports, the rappers were seeking $2.5 million. A representative for Monster told Rolling Stone the company plans to appeal the verdict, adding that "From the inception, Monster Energy has been willing to resolve this matter in a fair and equitable manner and we will continue to make additional efforts to reach a just resolution of this dispute." The lawsuit stemmed from confusion over permission to use a mix of multiple Beasties songs in 2012.
The 10th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf contest and concert returns to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, CA on July 12. The free daylong beach event features a variety of activities including a charity surf contest, a nerf surf jousting exposition between surf contest heats, the Rob Machado Bro Junior, and live music performances from Switchfoot, The Future's League, Run River North, and Cody Lovaas on the beach. The evening will round out with a screening of Switchfoot's documentary, Fading West, along with an intimate performance from the band at La Paloma Theatre. "The Switchfoot Bro-Am is my favorite day of the year. It's an entire community of surfing and rock and roll joining together for a surf contest and concert on the beach, all to benefit homeless and at risk youth - what could be better? And this year means even more than ever - it's our 10th Anniversary!" said Switchfoot's JonForeman.
