Tom Petty Lands First-Ever #1 Album
August 6, 2014

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have their first-ever #1 album, as the veteran rockers' Hypnotic Eye sold 131,000 copies in its first week in stores. Billboard reports it was Petty's best debut sales week of the SoundScan era and his best sales week since 1994. Sales of Hypnotic Eye were boosted by a tie-in to the ticket sales of Petty's upcoming tour. Petty's last album, Mojo in 2010, had a similar tie-in.

There were a number of new albums in the SoundScan top ten this week, as Eric Clapton's new release debuted at #2. The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale features John Mayer, Willie Nelson and others teaming with Clapton to pay tribute to Cale. At #3 is the soundtrack to Guardians Of The Galaxy, titled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, a collection of '70s classics that appear in the hit Marvel movie.

Last week's #1 album, the eponymous release from 5 Seconds Of Summer, is at #4, followed by singer Shawn Mendes debuting at #5 with his debut, self-titled EP. The teenage Mendes made his name by recording pieces of cover songs to Vine.

At #6 is the Frozen soundtrack, followed by In The Lonely Hour from Sam Smith at #7. Rockers Theory Of A Deadman debut at #8 with Savages, followed by singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis' new album The Voyager, which was the ex-Rilo Kiley frontwoman's best-ever sales debut. The newest Kidz Bop collection is at #10.

On the Digital Songs chart, Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj's collaboration "Bang Bang" debuts right at #1.
