Story:
Joint Communications
CEO John Parikhal |
|
|
As the
radio industry evolves at a rapid pace, critical decisions
about the medium’s future become increasingly more urgent.
Technology issues have enveloped the industry to such a
challenging extent, that the call for radio leaders to be
actionable has never resonated so loudly. John Parikhal has
never met a challenge he didn’t like, he relishes the very
concept. It’s spring and time for our annual check-up with
one of our industry’s deep thinkers.

RHYTHM CROSSOVER:
Def Con II: Mission Accomplished |
|
|
Island Records formed Def
Con II about a year ago as a new innovative and
specialized team within the Promotion Department of
Island Def Jam Music Group. The mission of Def Con II
promotion was to give IDJ a wide reaching ability at
radio on all of the artists delivered by the label's
joint ventures giving IDJ the opportunity to bring even
more great music to the marketplace with a focus on
Urban, Crossover and Rhythm radio. The Def Con II team
is being overseen by Island SVP/Promotion Rick Sackheim.
We recently caught up Sackheim to talk about the launch
and development of Def Con II.

PD Eddie Gutierrez |
|
|
Not many
programmers or general managers can actually say they
dug the hole for the antenna that beams out their
signal. KJEE GM/PD Eddie Gutierrez can. In his 14 years
at the station, he’s done just about every job there,
and done them well. Being a man of many hats, Eddie
still loves the essence of his gig – the music. That
passion shines through across the board at KJEE and has
translated into some more than respectable ratings
successes. We caught up with Eddie recently and got the
lowdown on what it’s like to be a real big fish in a
small, but affluent pond.

Metal Blade Celebrates 25 Years On The Edge |
|
|
When Metal Blade
Records founder and CEO Brian Slagel started his imprint
in 1982, it was intended only as an extension of the
underground Metal fanzine he produced at the time. His
first compilation of unsigned bands, The New Heavy Metal
Revue Presents Metal Massacre, became the launching pad
for artists such as Metallica and Ratt, and also became
the first release on Metal Blade. Now, 25 years later,
the label has grown into an international brand while
still maintaining its original vision. It’s pretty
monumental for an independent, niche label to survive
for 25 years, so FMQB spoke to Slagel about his
longevity.
