Quick Hits: NIN, Weezer, Metallica, Staind, AC/DC, Shinedown
April 22, 2008

Trent Reznor has done it again. Nine Inch Nails has released a new single, "Discipline," exclusively to radio this afternoon. The song was just finished and mastered in the studio yesterday, with a 24-hour turnaround to radio. The band will also allow radio stations to link online to an exclusive download of the song, as no one else will be licensed to release it for a few months. The band also promises "more news tomorrow," and Reznor posted yesterday on NIN.com, cryptically saying "2 weeks!" and nothing more.

Weezer has unveiled the cover and tracklisting for their new self titled album (already known as "the Red album"). The record has 10 songs, with a deluxe edition tacking on four more songs. The four bonus songs will also be available on iTunes. The "Red album" will be out on June 24. The cover art can be seen to the right:

Metallica is letting out little tidbits about their upcoming album in drips and drabs, and the latest is that it will be out "this fall," while frontman James Hetfield said that U.S. tour dates are planned for September. The band revealed the info on Saturday during their "Record Store Day" appearance at the Rasputin Music shop in Mountain View, CA. Meanwhile, perhaps in an effort to thwart early leaks, the band has launched a new Web site at MissionMetallica.com that will allow fans to hear the new album before it's finished. The site reads "Mission: Metallica Coming This May" and fans can submit their e-mail address for updates.

Even though Staind's next album is due out this summer, frontman Aaron Lewis is still prepping to record an acoustic-based solo album in the near future. "As soon as this [Staind] record is done and while we're out on tour I'll be writing and getting everything ready to go," Lewis tells Billboard.com. "It'll probably come out right on the tail end of this new Staind record." Lewis says that at the moment he's planning to produce and play most of the instruments on the album, but he added, "We'll see how far I get with that adventure."

AC/DC has reportedly finished recording a new album and is currently mixing the effort for a late 2008 release, singer Brian Johnson revealed this morning (4/22) during an interview on Washington D.C.'s DC 101. Recently the band reported that they were working on the untitled CD in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen.) Johnson also stated that the band will soon get the artwork done and take care of promotional activities in connection with the release, which will be followed by a tour. The record will be AC/DC's first new work since 2000's Stiff Upper Lip.

Shinedown's third album, The Sound of Madness, is due via Atlantic Records on June 24. The lead single, "Devour," will land at rock radio outlets on May 5. In addition, "Devour" will serve as the theme song to World Wrestling Entertainmentís June pay-per-view event, Night Of Champions, on June 29, it will be featured on ESPN throughout the current major league baseball season, and it will be included on the soundtrack to the Madden NFL 09 video game.
