FCC's Powell Not In Favor Of Extending Indecency Laws to Sat, Cable
March 4, 2004
FCC Chairman Michael Powell yesterday stated that he is not in favor of extending the current indecency regulations for terrestrial broadcast outlets to cable and satellite TV or satellite radio. He said that felt that any movement in this direction would face serious legal scrutiny. Appearing in an interview on Fox News Channel, Powell shared that he personally did not support an extension, and thought that Congress, after further constitutional review, would find it unwise to regulate subscription-based broadcasts.
Powell's comments arose just days after two Republican politicians, Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, voiced support of extending indecency guidelines to the paid services.
