Quick Hits: Metallica, Coldplay, John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails
June 16, 2008

Metallica found the time over the weekend to both rock out at Bonnaroo and announce the title of their highly-anticipated new studio album. According to the band's Web site, the new record is called Death Magnetic and will be out in September. The logo for the record was slowly revealed on the site last week.

Coldplay

Tonight at London's Brixton Academy, Coldplay will play the first of three scheduled free gigs around the world. The show will air on Sirius' BBC Radio 1 channel (channel 11) tonight at 7 p.m. ET. The band will also chat with host Zane Lowe before the concert. Their new album, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, will be out tomorrow in the U.S. but was released last Thursday in the U.K. Despite only being chart eligible for three days, the album debuts at #1 and sold 302,000 copies through Saturday night, according to reports. And last but not least, three songs from Coldplay will be sold as a downloadable expansion pack for Guitar Hero III. "Violet Hill," "Yellow" and "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 starting this Thursday, June 19.

Won't you let John Mayer take you on a sea cruise? The singer/songwriter will set sail on Mayercraft Carrier 2, the second annual fan cruise hosted by Mayer. The ship will take off from Los Angeles on March 27, 2009 and head to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Mayer will hand pick a number of artists to join him on the cruise, and Guster is the first to be announced. In related news, stay tuned for FMQB Productions presents Inside John Mayer: Where The Light Is, a one-hour radio special airing on stations around the country between June 27 and July 1.

Sirius will extend its all-Bruuuuce channel, "E Street Radio," into mid-2009 due to popular demand. "The voice of E Street Radio fans has been heard, and it is with great pleasure that we can extend the broadcast of the channel and continue this unique and exclusive experience,” said Scott Greenstein, Sirius President of Entertainment and Sports. "We are excited to continue offering Sirius listeners interviews with band members, insider reports and breaking news, and of course, unprecedented access to all the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band." E Street Radio airs on Sirius channel 10.

Nine Inch Nails have unveiled details on the CD release of The Slip. The album will be released July 22 in North America as an individually numbered limited edition, with a bonus DVD of live performances from the band's rehearsals for this summer's tour. The album will not be a limited release in the rest of the world. The Slip will also be released on vinyl two weeks later. Trent Reznor adds that The Slip "will remain free for download indefinitely" via NIN.com.
