A report on Internet dirt hound Matt Drudge's Web site today claimed that liberal Talk network Air America Radio was being investigated by the Secret Service over a pre-produced bit on the Randi Rhodes Show that insinuates gunfire aimed at President Bush.
In the skit, an announcer proclaimed, "A spoiled child is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer you ungrateful whelp." Four audio clips of gunshots were then broadcast, followed by the warning, "Just try it, you little bastard," and the sound of a gun being cocked.
Today Rhodes addressed the radio bit on her show, which is broadcasting from West Palm Beach, Florida all week, claiming that she had not heard the bit in advance, and actually hadn't heard all of it while it was airing, having put her headphones on at the end of the segment, wondering aloud after it's conclusion, "What is with all the killing?"
Rhodes went on to voice her disapproval of the skit and apologized, taking full responsibility for the segment because her name was attached to it and it aired on her show. She also vehemently denied that the Secret Service is investigating her at present, and actually invited them to contact her over the matter if they wished.
A statement from Air America Radio President Jon Sinton echoed her sentiments: "We are not under investigation from the Secret Service. We regret that a produced comedy bit that was in bad taste slipped through our normal vetting process. We do acknowledge that it was an internal error and internal discipline will be enforced."
