 R.E.M.
| R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck had his prized Rickenbacker guitar returned to him over the weekend. The guitar, which Buck has used since 1982, was stolen in Helsinki, Finland on September 9. Buck recovered the guitar just in time for the band's sold out show on Saturday in Luxembourg. Buck said, "It's great to have it back in my hands. I'm looking forward to playing it tonight in Luxembourg." Bertis Downs, R.E.M.'s manager, added, "We were always hopeful it would turn up, and thanks to the efforts of a lot of people, we are thrilled to have it back in Peter's possession. We are grateful and very happy that it worked out this way."Trent Reznor is asking for Nine Inch Nails' fans opinions. In a new e-mail sent today, Reznor writes, "I'd like to thank everyone for a very successful year so far in the world of Nine Inch Nails. I'm enjoying my couple of weeks off between legs of our Lights In The Sky tour and got to thinking... 'wouldn't it be fun to send out a survey to everyone that's shown interest in NIN?' Well, that's not exactly how it went, but regardless - here it is. As we've moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we've realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc." Fans who fill out the entire survey can then download a video of the band performing "1,000,000" live at Red Rocks and Reznor promises some fans could be selected at random to win prizes "like signed stuff, flying someone to a show somewhere in the world" or jokingly, "a magic amulet that makes you invisible [or] a date with [ex-NIN bassist] Jeordie White." The survey can be found here.
Singer Christina Milian has signed a deal with MySpace Records after splitting with Def Jam in 2006. Her label debut is due in the spring. The first single, "Us Against The World," will be available via the social networking site on October 6. "I've been out of the game for one and a half years, and I think I'm long overdue for a comeback, so I'm treating this album like it's my last chance to make an impression. I'm competing with myself and being very detailed," the 26-year-old told Billboard.com. "Before, I had a label telling me what direction to go in. Now, it's my choice, so I'm being very particular about it and I'm really excited." Meanwhile, Milian will appear in the romantic comedy The Ghosts of Girlfriends, starring Matthew McConaughey, which is due in theaters in February. She also is featured as the lead in a live-action film made for the video game Need For Speed, due November 28. Radiohead are giving fans another chance to remix one of the songs off In Rainbows. Fans can purchase pieces of "Reckoner" online starting tomorrow, and remix the song via radioheadremix.com. The band offered the song "Nude" in a similar fashion for remixing earlier this year.
The lineup has been unveiled for Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit concert, to be held October 25 and 26 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. Young has played every year since launching the benefit in 1986, and this year he will be joined by Wilco, Jack Johnson, Cat Power, Death Cab For Cutie, Norah Jones, ZZ Top, Smashing Pumpkins and Josh Groban. Proceeds from the shows go to the Bridge School's work with children with severe physical and speech impediments. Silversun Pickups are currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their breakthrough debut album Carnavas. Singer Brian Aubert has revealed the next record will be titled Swoon and should be out sometime early in 2009 via Dangerbird Records. "As of right now this record is very different because we've written everything at once. The first one was very much scraping together a lot of the songs we've written over the years," explains Aubert. "For Carnavas, because we were coming off of [their first EP] Pikul, we stripped it of the organics, got rid of the strings and warmer sounds. Now that we are jumping off from Carnavas we are putting some of that stuff back."
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member and session drummer Earl Palmer passed away on Friday at the age of 84. Palmer got his start as a session drummer in New Orleans, working with artists like Fats Domino and Little Richard. He also was featured on hits like the Righteous Brothers’ "You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’," and albums such as The Monkees’ Head, Elvis Costello’s King of America and Tom Waits’ Blue Valentine. Palmer’s drumming also featured in the theme song to The Flintstones. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
