Is Facebook planning on following in the steps of MySpace with their own music service? The New York Post reports that Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg is in talks with online sites that stream, such as Rhapsody, iMeem, iLike and Lala.com, for an outsourcing deal that would integrate music further into the popular social networking site. Many of those sites' players are already available as applications on users' Facebook pages.
The Post's sources also say that Zuckerberg and other Facebook execs have met with major label representatives as well. However, Facebook is not interested in getting in as deeply with the labels as MySpace has with MySpace Music, of which the big four labels have a stake.
Meanwhile, PaidContent.org reports that plans for a private equity investment in MySpace Music is less likely to happen. According to sources, News Corp. and MySpace believe such a plan would be too uncessarily complicated at this point in time.
